Unitrends Unveils Next-Generation Physical Backup and Recovery Appliances with Tiered Flash Storage

Uni2015

BURLINGTON, Mass. – January 15, 2015 – Unitrends today unveiled the next generation of itsRecovery-Series family of purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs). With its new portfolio, which includes 11 models that scale from 1 terabyte (TB) to 97 TB of raw storage, Unitrends sets a new standard in backup and recovery performance with tiered flash storage and makes cloud adoption much more affordable for companies of all sizes.

Click to Tweet: The new generation of @Unitrends appliances has arrived! Look for enhanced performance & affordable #cloud! http://bit.ly/1wVyGB5

Tiered Flash Storage Boosts Performance
With the release of the next-generation Recovery-Series family, Unitrends becomes the data protection industry’s price/performance leader. The company is bringing the value of flash storage, at new unprecedented price points, to its Recovery-Series appliances ranging from 1U and above. Tiered flash storage delivers improved backup performance, faster restore and disaster recovery processes, and greater scalability and flexibility. Additionally, customers now have the ability to implement policies around flash cache usage to optimize performance as data grows and prevent performance degradation, even as appliances age.

In addition to tiered flash storage, Unitrends has made a number of product enhancements that drive superior performance, including upgrades to the hardware’s central processing unit (CPU), advancements in its memory and RAID, and improvements in compression capabilities. The result is unrivaled backup and disaster recovery performance both locally and in the cloud, including:

·         A 300 percent improvement in backup processing time
·         A 300 percent improvement in recovery point objectives (RPOs)
·         A 125 percent improvement in recovery time objectives (RTOs)
·         A 200 percent improvement in local archiving

“Leveraging SSD for tiered flash storage in purpose-built backup appliances will increase performance and potentially give Unitrends an edge in performance-intensive use cases,” said Dave Simpson, senior analyst, storage, 451 Research. “With its new appliances, Unitrends also made cost improvements and added features, including increased capacity using 6 TB enterprise drives, hardware RAID, and integrated archive and cloud, allowing companies to focus on their business, not their backup or recovery performance.”

Affordable Cloud Adoption
The Unitrends Recovery-Series family now caters to organizations of all sizes – from small businesses and remote office/branch office (ROBO) locations to large enterprises. The product line features three new low-cost physical appliances for small businesses and two new 3U form factor appliances, along with a 4U model, for enterprises with high-volume storage needs. Small businesses with a modest IT budget can purchase the Recovery-201 desktop appliance, which is priced at approximately $1,200, or the Recovery-602 or Recovery-603 1U half-height rack appliances, which start around $4,000. Companies with large storage requirements can choose from two new 3U appliances – the Recovery-933S, which includes 37 TB of raw storage, or the Recovery-936S, featuring 73 TB of raw storage – or the 4U 943S appliance with 97 TB of raw storage.

Additionally, Unitrends is making hybrid cloud adoption more affordable than ever by offering its No Limits Cloud™ service to Recovery-Series customers at price points suitable for entry-level companies. The No Limits Cloud replication service, along with the company’s Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS)offering, comprise the Unitrends Cloud, which is augmented with Recovery Assurance for vSphere™ and Hyper-V® environments.

“Unitrends is revolutionizing the PBBA market once again with our third-generation Recovery-Series family,” said Mark Campbell, chief marketing and technology officer at Unitrends. “These flash-enabled devices are built from the ground up to handle the increasing demands of administrators coping with growing virtual and physical data volumes, compressed backup and recovery windows, and the incorporation of the hybrid cloud.”

Unitrends next-generation Recovery-Series appliances are available now and can be purchased direct or through the channel. Pricing varies by appliance. Unitrends makes 2014 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances

Announced this week, Unitrends establishes itself as force to be reckoned in the Disaster Recovery marketplace with its inclusion onto one of the most prestigious lists in the IT industry. Gartner provides analysis and evaluation of the leading providers that offer a range of traditional to innovative recovery capabilities. Being added to the “Magic Quadrant” along with receiving the highest rankings in the SMB to Mid-Market space on the 2014 DCIG report, Unitrends brand has quickly risen to the top of the class.  To see how the Unitrends competes against the rest of the backup vendors you can visit their website at http://www.unitrends.com/resources/competitive-analysis.  Below is the report on Unitrends from Gartners.

Magic Quadrant

Unitrends

A privately held company that has been around for over two decades, Unitrends has become more visible in the past two years, growing its installed base to over 10,000 customers (including 3,000 from the PHD Virtual acquisition). Unitrends targets mainly the midmarket with a series of integrated Recovery-Series backup appliances, which are also sold as software-only virtual appliance solutions called Unitrends Enterprise Backup. The vendor also offers cloud backup to its own data center. With the December 2013 PHD Virtual acquisition, Unitrends acquired two products: a VM-specific backup product, which has been renamed Unitrends Virtual Backup, and ReliableDR, an automated DR orchestration and testing tool, which is now integrated with both backup products, offering customers site recovery capabilities for private cloud and Unitrends’ cloud deployments.

Unitrends’ all-in-one appliances can support a wide range of operating environments and applications with comprehensive functions, and can scale up to 500 physical servers and 5,000 VMs (VMware and Hyper-V) per appliance. Multiple appliances, including those dispersed geographically, can be managed with a single user interface. Unitrends also provides postprocess, content-aware, byte-level deduplication on the target side. Unitrends Virtual Backup targets IT generalists in smaller environments with easier agentless management and a centralized Web interface across VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer.

Strengths

  • Unitrends Recovery-Series appliances and Unitrends Enterprise Backup software offer comprehensive features, and the integration with ReliableDR offers additional DR capabilities.
  • The vendor’s backup products have been well-tested in the field with over 10,000 customers.
  • Customers like the all-in-one licensing and centralized management of multiple appliances, including those dispersed geographically.

Cautions

  • Although Unitrends is currently committed to continued development of Unitrends Virtual Backup, customers and prospects should nevertheless check on its road maps before renewal and purchase.
  • Unitrends offers only NAS backup over NFS or CIFS.
  • The vendor’s backup products do not support array-based snapshots.

Game-changing innovation that lets you verify disaster recovery

PHD Virtual, a Unitrends Company, is an Elite level VMware Technology Alliance Partner, has pioneered the concept of Disaster Recovery Assurance. Disaster Recovery Assurance leverages the synergies between the virtualization and storage layers in private clouds, enabling the orchestration and full automation of recovery processes. Recovery can be exercised without
human intervention or impacting production systems. Essentially, Disaster Recovery Assurance provides automated enforcement of RPOs (maximum data loss) and the continuous measurement and compliance of RTOs (maximum outage time).

ReliableDR from PHD Virtual enables datacenter managers to replace outdated or ineffective legacy DR processes with frequent and automated DR testing of all x86 IT services. Unlike legacy DR tests, which are typically run once per year or at best quarterly, ReliableDR enables DR testing to be performed as often as required, typically on a daily or hourly basis. And ReliableDR generates certified recovery points that provide stopgaps in time against data corruption, bad patches, sabotage and other logical disasters.

ReliableDR orchestrates the physical and virtual infrastructure components such as hypervisors, storage, operating systems, and applications, in order to enforce coherent and dependency aware IT Service recovery policies. These policies can be set by IT or business management and are verified automatically through a closed-loop mechanism that rectifies configuration drift and
identifies threats to recovery as soon as they occur. ReliableDR has zero footprint in production and requires no changes to applications. It is fully application-aware and operates at the IT Service level to test complete recovery processes in fenced virtual sandboxes. The certification cycle is aligned with business policy; tests can go from a cursory heartbeat check and
a web page access for a minor service, to complex queries and heavy transactions for critical production applications. Upon successful conclusion of tests, ReliableDR certifies the recovery point and catalogs it.

Not only are enterprise clouds vastly more dynamic than previous paradigms, but application complexity is also increasing geometrically, as the number of individual components that collaborate in the provision of each IT Service continues to increase. This growing interdependence fuels risk, as an individual component failure may have a severe knock-on or cascade effect on critical IT services. Moving Beyond Time-Consuming Legacy Tools Traditional backup is a 30-year old technology originally designed to copy blocks of data from expensive disk to cheap tape, and to keep track of their location. When backup was first created, application architectures were monolithic, deployed in mainframes with rigid and predictable configuration management systems. Applications and systems are significantly more complicated today. In cloud environments, a daily backup routine is simply inadequate to assure disaster recovery. Backups are very time consuming to recover from, and components get easily out of sync with one another, particularly when backup jobs fail or finish .
